In the 1930s, Ruth Wakefield and her husband bought an historic former toll house and turned it into the Toll House Inn. Wakefield was a trained nutritionist and she became well known in the local area for her tasty desserts. The creation of the chocolate chip cookie happened while she was making her regular Butter Drop Do cookies. There are a few different accounts of how this happened but most people agree that she added chopped pieces of Nestle chocolate bar to the cookie mixture which created a great combination. Rather than just melting completely, the chocolate pieces softened slightly and created what Wakefield initially called ‘Chocolate Crispies’.
The Rise to Fame
The cookie became immediately popular and Ruth Wakefield included the recipe in her cookbook. A Boston newspaper shared this with readers and Nestle noticed a surge in chocolate bar sales across New England. After investigating what had happened, they struck a deal with Wakefield. They secured a forty-year contract to print her recipe on their packaging and by 1939, Nestle had introduced the first chocolate chips for putting into cookies. Cookies are also great for office lunches, and firms like crumbsdelivered.co.uk/shop/office-lunch-delivery offer cookie boxes alongside their sandwich platters.
The Modern Evolution of the Cookie
The basic recipe of a chocolate cookie remains the same, but over the years, many different variations have been invented and they feature different types of chocolate and additional ingredients like walnuts. By the 1980s, chocolate chip cookies accounted for approximately half of all cookies made and there are billions produced every year. The chocolate chip even has its own special day on August 4th!
This accidental invention has become a timeless classic that is loved by many people all over the world.
