Dick Van Dyke was born Richard Wayne Van Dyke on December 13, 1925, in West Plains, Missouri. The eldest of four sons of Hazel (née McCord) and Albert Van Dyke, a milkman, Dick grew up in Danville, Illinois. He worked at his family’s milk truck business before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After serving in the war, Van Dyke moved to Chicago and began appearing in theater and on television.
