March Madness Bracket and Potential Cinderellas

Everybody loves a good March Madness Cinderella story, whether it is the 2021 Oral Roberts Sweet Sixteen run or the 2013 UConn Championship team, upsets are what seem to make the NCAA tournament interesting even to the most casual fan. People who don’t watch a minute of college basketball throughout the regular season are suddenly filling out brackets and even making bets, sometimes based on upsets. While we do not have an official March Madness Bracket to pick upsets from as of now, below you will find an example bracket, along with some potential Cinderellas.

Potential Cinderellas

South Dakota State

The Jackrabbits have been one of the most consistent teams in the entire country this season. They are even currently tied with Murray State for the longest winning streak in the country. They are also the only team in Summit League history to go undefeated in conference play. THe Jackrabbits only have one bad loss on the season, a 98-84 drubbing against lowly Idaho on December 4, likely the loss that kept them out of the top 25 at the end of this season.

Baylor Scheierman is the heart and soul of the Jackrabbit team, despite being only a sophomore.  Scheierman leads the team in points per game (16.2), rebounds per game (8.2), assists per game (4.6), and steals per game (0.6).  His game is somewhat unique, as he will play point guard, but also has the size to back down small forwards into the paint to get to the hoop. If he is matched up against a bigger opponent, he shoots a consistent fadeaway.

The Jackrabbits also shoot better than 45% from three on the year, far and away the best three point percentage on the year.

Bottom Line: If SDSU is shooting the three like they are capable of, they can beat anyone.

Murray State Racers

While everybody remembers the Ja Morant glory days at Murray State, you may be surprised to know that they are tied with the above Jackrabbits for the longest active winning streak.  Forward KJ Williams is the clear MVP of the Racers squad, scoring 18.s points per game while pulling down a team-high 8.5 rebounds each game.  The biggest win was probably their win over Memphis, where they sped up one of the fastest teams in college basketball.  Their worst loss was probably to East Tennessee State on November 22.

Bottom line: A team that wins this consistently is a threat to any team.
