Headwear is expected

Most of us will never usually wear a hat, but the mother of the bride typically wears one. That said, a lot of modern weddings will have a more informal or unique dress code that may include fascinators, flowers or even jewels. Speak to the bride to understand her vision for the wedding and get some guidance.

Consider your colours

As the mother of the bride you will want to coordinate with the overall colour scheme and wear an outfit that will blend well in the photographs. Again, work with your daughter to understand her planned colour palette so that you can create an outfit within it. The basic rule is not to wear white, ivory, cream, or the same colour as the bridesmaids.

Think about footwear

A wedding can be a long day and you will need footwear that is both comfortable and stylish. Heels elongate the legs but stilettos are likely to be a no-go, especially if there is grass and outdoor drinks involved! Don’t forget pretty ballet flats either, especially if you are tall or have great legs!

Look at your makeup

Make sure you have good makeup for the day and use a primer, foundation and powder to create photo-worthy skin. It may be worth using the same makeup artist as your daughter, as you will all want to look good in the photos! Hair should be shiny and blow-dried so that it is bouncy and smooth for the big day. Don’t forget accessories such as a piece of jewellery to catch the light and a pretty clutch to keep those essentials in, lipstick to touch up after the toasting, and tissues to stop your mascara running when your emotions run high!
