- The first step to setting up a charity in the UK according to the UK Government website is to find three trustees to support your charities. This is important as you will most likely need money to achieve whatever your charity’s aim is.
- Next, you must be certain that the charity idea you have has ‘charitable purposes for the public benefit’. This is compulsory to prevent people from trying to set up a charity to receive charity benefits but only for personal gain.
- The exciting but difficult part of setting up a charity, which sounds simple but is nearly as hard as choosing a baby’s name, is choosing a name for your charity! A bit like when setting up a business, you’ll need it to reflect what your charity does, and to be easy to remember.

- In order to make your charity official and legal, you will need to have a ‘governing document’ and to register it. To do this, you will need to earn over £5,000 a year.
- Once you have your charity up and running you will need to come up with ways to achieve whatever your aim is. You’ll want to save money as much as possible on any unavoidable expenses.
